What Emmeline Wore In October - Day 17

After a weekend of music (and a good look around the Manchester Print Fair), I'm excited to be back and working on some exciting things! Thought Bubble festival is only a few weeks away, so everything's full throttle in preparing for my table there, and I have a couple of really great commissions in the works this week too.

This is a usual at-work look for me: a cosy jumper, some kind of soft scarf for when I realise I forgot to put the heating on, and a pair of skinny jeans. These boots are some of my favourites (yes, yes, yes orange shoes!), although I don't wear them out and about as much as I'd like as they're quite sky-high. I usually save them for when I don't have to walk too much - parties, the cinema, or, y'know, for feeling awesome at my desk.

The jumper and jeans are from H&M, whilst the boots are from Boohoo - the scarf is a charity shop find!

What Emmeline Wore In October - Day 16

I'm back at Manchester's 'A Carefully Planned Festival' today - we saw a lot of amazing bands yesterday, but two of my favourites were definitely Denuo and Lake Komo (pictured below), completely different, but both brilliant! ACPF is always great for finding new favourite bands and discovering the Northern Quarter's bar and music venue hidden gems.

Today I'm wearing a few items you may recognise from this project (come on, I can't wear something different eeevery single day, you know what it's like when you get new clothes!), so you might have spotted this gorgeous Yumi dress and this White Stuff coatigan before! They're definitely going to be staples of my wardrobe from now on. I am however wearing a more practical element in my outfit today, and after the (literal) miles walked between seeing bands yesterday (and today's rainy weather) I'm opting for my fancy/trusty Berghaus boots.

What Emmeline Wore In October - Day 15

Today I'm off to a music festival! (So I'm keeping this short but sweet). As usual, when I'm at gigs I whip out my glasses, so today you'll see me sporting them with this lovely yellow top from Joules, along with black jeans from H&M and tan boots from FatFace. I look a bit sassy in this drawing, I'm not always so sassy in real life haha, but I do love drawing characters with a bit of sass.

What Emmeline Wore In October - Day 14 x White Stuff

Today's feature is one of my favourites - I absolutely adore this coat from White Stuff. Well, I say coat, but apparently it's a 'coatigan' as it's lightweight and cosy enough to be at that perfect spot between a coat and a cardigan! I love wearing a splash of red with my outfits and lipstick, especially these deep wine-toned reds (I think with my dark hair and super pale skin it's sort of my colour?).

I snapped these photos at a nearby country park, and took the opportunity to get a bit Amélie with the colour palette and contrast the reds with the greens. It's these sort of real-world colour palettes that end up inspiring so much of my illustration work. You'll always find me snapping pictures on my phone or jotting down quick sketches of real-world inspiration, and it can be surprising just how many huge projects come from tiny sparks of an idea whilst on a train or in a park!

This coat is going to be a familiar feature in my wardrobe as we head towards winter, so for anyone that wants to take a peek at the real thing it's the Fern Wool Coatigan over at White Stuff. You may remember White Stuff featured in last year's What Emmeline Wore In July, it was amazing working with them last year - they're lovely!

So we're two weeks into the project now! It's actually gone surprisingly quickly, and I'm learning a lot about my illustration and my own likes and dislikes. I'll post a round-up of the first fifteen soon, so keep an eye out for it.

What Emmeline Wore In October - Day 13

I have a few big deadlines to work to today, but I'm planning a relaxed lunchbreak where I can sit with a cup of tea and the latest Saga graphic novel (one of my favourite ever series!) and just switch-off a bit. Hopefully this evening I'll be popping over to my friend's house for a Halloween-decoration-making and pizza-eating evening, so I have that to look forward to as well!

Today I'm wearing my F&F dungaree dress, with a long sleeved top from Uniqlo's collection with Celia Birtwell. The top has a lovely slightly vintage feeling flower design on it (and I love Celia's logo), and I think it looks great paired with the black denim pinafore.

What Emmeline Wore In October - Day 12

Today's been one of those days where everything suddenly seems to break or go wrong! The most devastating one (aside from the our broken down car) was realising that yesterday I'd accidentally saved a version of a master photoshop file with half of the layers deleted - losing about six illustrations. It all looked okay for a minute when I found a back-up, but that version had been cropped so my characters were left without heads! Argh! I'm following some leads about restoring previous versions, but it's not looking great.

Whew, okay - to shake all that off I'm thinking about taking my bike out for a spin at lunchtime. I've been cycling a fair bit more recently, and it's amazing how much better it can make you feel - cool Autumn breezes rushing in your face, beautiful colours, a good dose of exercise!

Today I'm wearing an old corduroy jacket, a hand-me-down from my Mum, which was originally from Dorothy Perkins, a yellow jumper from Joules (proper feature coming soon), a gorgeous mystery-brand scarf I picked up in a charity shop, and some basic skinny jeans from H&M - also, of course, my bike helmet!

What Emmeline Wore In October - Day 11 x Fat Face

Today I'm featuring a gorgeous outfit from Fat Face! I love going on adventures and Autumnal walks in the woods, so this cosy gilet, jeans, biker boots and gorgeously coloured scarf are perfect. The gilet is fleece lined so it feels like giving a piggy-back to the warmest tiny lamb imaginable (er, I assume!) - it's that snuggly. It kept me going on a cold and rainy night's camping a few weeks ago as well. The boots have quickly become a staple in my wardrobe, as I so often struggle to find shoes that are hardy yet lovely enough to withstand my frequent long walks - but these seem genuinely great.

I wore this outfit for a walk around the beautiful Rivington near Chorley and kicked around between the falling leaves and warm Autumn sunlight. I always find it really inspiring for my illustration work to take a break from the screens (and in some cases paper and ink!) and get out into the wild. I think a lot of the time you need to give yourself that space to allow your ideas room to grow - there haven't been many ideas I've remained stuck on after a good, long wander.

To list everything out, today I'm wearing:

The Gilet in Very Berry
Atlantic Everyday Jeans
Hollie T-Shirt in Navy (so very soft)
Filey Biker Boots in Tan
and the beautiful scarf pictured.

A huge thank you to Fat Face for kidly sending over my choices and for being part of the project! *Please note this is not a paid promotion.

World Mental Health Day

This is actually an oldie illustration, but when I saw that today was World Mental Health Day, I thought it would be really appropriate to share it. Mental health issues affect so many of us, either directly or through our friends and family, so I think it's really important to wear away at the stigma mental illness can have, and to encourage everyone to feel more comfortable having honest conversations about how we're doing.

So today maybe reach out to that friend you haven't heard much from in a while, or just let someone know you're here for them. Look out for each other this World Mental Health day!

What Emmeline Wore In October - Day 10!

Today I'm working on a lot of exciting new commissions, and I have a few big discussions in the pipe-line, so today's look swings more to the business side of the spectrum.

I've spoken about it a lot, but I really think there's something to be said for people who go out and start their own businesses. Freelancing is tough, and it takes a lot of guts to say to yourself "I know this is what I want to do!" and go out there and follow your dreams. Winning the Freelancer of the Year award back in June gave me the opportunity to meet so many amazing self-employed people, and I find myself constantly inspired by them! So today this is for them.

I'm wearing a lovely casual dress from Boohoo, with a necklace from Accessorize and a minimalist handbag from Radley - oddly enough all past presents from friends and family!

What Emmeline Wore In October - Day 9

Nine days into the 'What Emmeline Wore In October' project and I'm definitely starting to feel both the benefits and burden of taking on a daily illustration challenge.

I'm seeing my work and idea generation speed up, I'm learning new techniques, and I'm really enjoying the visual diary aspect of it - but I have to say on days like today (a Sunday) it can feel a bit tough to drag yourself away from fun plans to make time to illustrate. I know a lot of people are doing Inktober at the moment, which I took part in a couple of years ago, and that's a brilliant one for really pushing yourself as an illustrator, but I'm sure at some point you'll feel that nag of responsibility when it gets to 11pm and you haven't done your ink drawing!

I think a lot of it boils down to forcing yourself to stay motivated. For me I find that overcoming this for this project has such a hugely positive knock-on effect for the rest of my work - it pushes you to take that first step, and then that motivation is in overdrive for all the other commissions and personal projects for the rest of the day.

Today I'm wearing some comfy jeans from FatFace and one of my favourite cardigans ever from Boden, which my parents' gave me as a Christmas present last year. After a busy weekend, it's all about snuggliness for me today!

What Emmeline Wore In October - Day 8

Today I'm going house-hunting, eek! It's my first ever proper day looking to buy a house, so I'm really excited. I'm trying out wearing my hair in (as Andrew calls it..) a hair-pastry - it's long enough now that I can braid and twist it around quite happily.

I'm wearing a vintage 'Keneth Too!' jumper I picked up in a Preston charity shop - it's a gorgeous shade of blue with a scalloped straight neckline and a really lovely knitted pattern. I don't wear it as often as I should, but that's one of the perks of this challenge - it encourages me to dig out some of the less-lazy options and wear something a bit different. The jeans were kindly given to me by Joules, and I'll properly feature the full yummy outfit from them soon!

What Emmeline Wore In October - Day 7

Okay, I've gone mustard yellow and black again..and similarly to the tights, I've also had my fair share of ambiguously complimentary comments about my yellow coat. What is it about mustard yellow that gets people making comments? In London I actually had a guy come up to me whilst I wore this coat and ask if I was a detective! I'd like to say yes.

This coat is a bit of a classic of mine (you may have spotted it in my outfit series last year) which I picked up from Ness. The scarf, another classic, was a charity-shop treasure find and I'm fully in love with it's deep colours and snuggliness.

Tonight I'm heading out to Chorley (recently named least happy town in the UK, although I honestly don't know why - I think it's great!) for the annual Chorley Live weekend. It's brilliant - bands playing in every place you can imagine (last year we saw a few gigs in a chip shop, some in the library, and one in the bank!) and this year Andrew's playing his first ever proper gig, in, coincidentally...a mustard-yellow-walled café.
