Hello! How are you?
It's been a while hasn't it?

Yes, I'm pretty good thankyou.
I graduated from Falmouth BA (Hons) Illustration in July with a 2.1 (nearly a 1st) and I'm represented by Advocate agency now ( www.advocate-art.com ).  I went to visit them yesterday in London after a lovely weekend with friends.

Ummmm, I've redesigned my website a bit - changed the titles (made them a little more grown-up), divided up some sections, made the images bigger etc. www.emmelineillustration.com  Do you like it? I'm not sure if you can remember what the old one looks like, but I hope you think it's better now.

What've you been doing with your summer?

I'm back into drawinnnnggg yay! I've been sketching most of this gloriously rainy day, and painting a little bit too - though I'm very dissapointed with the Designers gouache I bought, it dosn't compare to the Windsor&Newton stuff - oh well.

Oh! Today is my mum and dad's silver (25th) wedding anniversary so I made them this lovely picture:

They do look almost exactly like that, but...real, not a drawing.  They're having a big party soon and I'm quite excited about it.

I'm sorry I don't have very much to say, it was nice to see you!

We should meet up again soon and I'll show you some more drawings if you like.

Snowglobe

Just to be ironic, I decided to complete my icy snowglobe project over the few hottest days ever.

Started this one back in January but got stuck on the story phase and never got any finished artworks.

The story's about a little girl at some unspecified point in time who is searching for firewood unsuccessfully.

She meets a little boy who tells her that there's good pickin's of firewood in the forest, but she's been told not to go there.  Well...she goes anyway, and they get caught by an evil forest witch who protects the woods.  The boy begs her not to hurt the girl as he made her go there, so the witch traps the boy in a snowglobe.

The girl grows up treasuring the snowglobe and the boy trapped inside.

She goes back to the witch three times to ask her to release him, and on the third time the witch smashes the snowglobe.

The girl thinks that the boy is dead..but that evening he appears from a snowstorm and they are together and in love forever.

Ahhh so the New York trip did not feel the urge to become destiny. Silly plane strikes.

Well, hopefully it will be postponed until June where we can rebook our appointments and wow the big apple.

Below is a poster I knocked out in a few hours one morning. I had doodled these characters a while ago and

was searching for some way to put them into context - Innocent smoothies seemed perfect. So there we go!

This is an image I finished about five minutes ago and entered for the AOI cycling competition.

I'm happy with it! it looks like a lovely patchwork quilt.

New! Improved!

Ahoy!

Well, it's been a good week for completion, yes yes indeed.
Firstly, Poppy and The Origami Bird has now become a full dummy book with four final artworks (and thousands of pages of prep work and character paintings)!

I've sent it off, along with the Clouds and Weather Systems information book to Macmillan as entries to the Macmillan Prize competition - we'll see how that pans out!

Secondly!

My Illustrated Quote image for the Falmouth Illustration Third Year book is done done done.

I wanted to showcase all the things I like to paint, namely clouds, fun characters, monsters, clouds, blossom trees and birds.

I can't wait to see the finished book, I'm sure it's going to be ace, there are so many talented people on the course.

Finally, yesterday I finished off two posters to form a series with the Aussie shampoo advert I'd done a few months ago.  I had a few ideas flash into my head in the morning and just went with it, I think the project has become much more substancial being a trio.

Well, that's about it at the moment!

Ominous "PROJECT X"

I was asked to illustrate a small section of 'Macbeth for kids'.  The part I was given was towards the start where the three witches are on the heath with the mist and storm etcetc...

Couldn't go any bigger than A5 with it, which is considerably smaller than I usually work, but oh well.  I wanted to keep the witches awaaaaayyy from that whole stereotypical big-nosed-green-hag thang, so I worked with the ideas that witches are associated with shapeshifting/animals and such.  I like that it looks like they're just dressed up in creepy animal costumes too.

Aussie? I see.

Well, I've been doing lots of work on my current origami themed children's book, but you're not allowed to see that just yet..teehee!


However, I'll throw this into your eyes instead:

I finished this poster off really quickly, which was a wonderful feeling! I like to do little projects between hefty kids books and get things finished. I painted the hair, used pencils for the linework on the hair, bottles, logo etc and digital for the rest - whey!

Oh i am a slow loris.

"Long time no see!" you might say. Well, you'd be right. I haven't uploaded a jot for two months, but now, as a distraction from finishing my dissertation about Monsters I bring you three things I've been doing...


Number one

This is the cover for my finished children's information book Clouds and Weather Systems.

Lovely lovely. I'm very happy with it, Alan Male said he thought it was 'bloody good' so that's nice.  There are a few spreads from it up on the V&A website that I entered for the Student Illustration awards.

I really like painting birds and clouds so this was a pretty appropriate project.

Number two!

Another things I really like doing recently:.....ORIGAMI.  Mmmm, a little obsessed at the moment.  There are paper birds, butterflies and beetles adorning my desk.

Anyway, I wanted to somehow weedle in some origami to a project, or two, so I've made a flyer for a sushi delivery service in London called YouMe Sushi.  There are instructions on the bottom of it for you to make your own origami prawn (which I made up...whey!) and you can tear off the top 3/4 to use as the square of paper to make it.  Then the plan is that you want to make the prawn again, so you keep the instructions, and therefore keep the contact details for the business...sneaky sneaks.

 I've also jammed origami into the book I'm illustrating/writing at the moment about a bored girl who finds an origami book..dot dot dot.

Number three!

This is a project I finished yesterday so I could get it in with the other work for assessment. I'd nearly given up on it and thought it looked terrible, but add brown paper to anything and you're on to a winner.  Well, not a winner but I think it looks quite good.  It's a book jacket for After Dark, a short novel by Haruki Murakami, a really great author so go and read The Wind Up Bird Chronicle now, or failing this, read Kafka on The Shore, but I haven't read that one yet....I hear it's brilliant.

Actually I have a number four too...

It's a poster for a National Trust nationwide event where you can go along and make lovely paper flowers.  They want to make the largest garden of paper flowers the world has ever seen, and with a message teaching about keeping your garden environmentally friendly - naww.
